The way we use storage space has changed over the past few years and there has been a departure from the usual DIY project or moving home. Self-storage is now being utilised for so many different reasons; once a place to tidy away excess items, it is now considered an extension of the home and a place to run a business.

So, we have been asking our customers to reveal the surprising and fascinating ways that they have been using self-storage. And we’re starting with a very cool customer who uses our unit to house… Cosplay costumes!

Cosplay is a hobby where enthusiasts dress up and play their favourite anime, manga or graphic novel characters; it’s an immersive experience that has a huge following across the globe. But as you can imagine - the elaborate costumes take up a lot of space, especially as your hobby keeps growing!

We spoke to our cosplay connoisseur about his hobby, how self-storage has allowed him to pursue his pastime and his advice for other hobbyists:

Why is storage space, such as Space Next Door, so useful for hobbyists such as yourself?

In the beginning, I wasn't exactly sure of storage space as I was unfamiliar with the rates but Space Next Door understands my need for space at an affordable price and with good access, and they gave me reasonable rates.

What is the best way of storing Cosplay costumes?

It's best to have another space to store your costume so that it doesn't clutter your everyday wardrobe at home, especially when you’re living with family members. Cosplay costumes can be bulky and don’t fit into regular cupboards, so self-storage allows us to keep them safe without worrying that they’ll get knocked or scratched. Keep them in boxes for extra protection and to keep them organised.

Does having self-storage mean that you can add to your collection without the worry of cluttering up your home space, so you're able to pursue your hobby freely?

Yes, as time goes by there are some characters you want to add to your list. You can add more depending on your storage space size and how you organise your unit. Keeping them in boxes to keep them compact allows you to use the space more efficiently, but you can always size up your unit too.

Are there any tips you can give to hobbyists on how to get started on a hobby they might be interested in?

Most people would say research the hobby you are interested in but my advice is to experience it yourself even if you know nothing or little about it. Research is based on thoughts and knowledge, while experience gets you to know the excitement and details of your chosen hobby, and then you can find out if it’s right for you.

Are there any tips you can give to hobbyists on how to choose the right storage (for example, areas, size, features)?

Always start with a small size because as your hobby grows so will your storage space. It is optional to choose an aircon or non-aircon unit as it won’t affect And for a bonus, take a storage unit that is nearer to your home location as it'll be easy for you to transport your stuff.

Is there anything else you’d like hobbyists to know about your hobby?

I've been Cosplaying for almost 10 years now, I'm glad I have come this far doing what I enjoy doing. If you enjoy your hobby, keep doing what you love!
