Storing your large appliances and bulky furniture
So what to do with our bulky furniture and large appliances? We know the feeling because there’s only a few things more daunting than trying to move our big and cumbersome pieces of furniture without damaging it or our homes.
If you do decide to move it into storage it is quite crucial to know how to safely secure your items to use again later.
These easy steps will take the headache away and solve your moving and storage nightmares in no time!
Clean the Appliances
Cleaning your appliances will ensure that they last for a good few more years.
- Washing machine. Clean off the inside and outside of the washing machine with a damp cloth. Make sure there is no residue from detergent. Leaving the lid or door open for a couple of hours will ensure that the appliance dries out completely.
- Dishwasher. Clean inside and out with a damp cloth and be sure to also clean the tray very carefully. Remove any food particles and detergent residue.
- Refrigerator. Remove all the food items from your fridge and unplug. Remove all the shelving and trays. Clean inside and out and leave the door open for at least a day to ensure all it dries properly.
Clean the Furniture
Like your appliances, your larger furniture pieces should be cleaned before storage. To clean upholstered furniture, begin by removing any dust, dirt, or debris with your vacuum. If you do not have a vacuum, hitting your sofa or mattress with a broom stick will also release dust. Be careful of using chemical cleaners as this can harm your furniture.
Any larger wooden items should be cleaned with a specialised cleaning agent. Be sure to follow the instructions on the bottle.
Moving Your Appliances and Furniture
Always refer to the owners manual for specific instructions on how to move your appliances. This will help you make sure you’ve unplugged all the needed components and that your appliance does not get damaged. If you’re not sure how to disconnect your appliances, contact a professional for assistance. Disassemble any larger furniture, if possible.
Once your furniture and appliances are ready to be moved, cover them with moving blankets or bubble wrap. Secure the covering with straps or rope to help prevent them from slipping off. In addition to protecting your furniture and appliances, this will protect your flooring and walls from damage.
Moving the furniture on a dolly or moving pad will be less stressful on your back and will also protect your flooring and walls from damage. Do not lift heavy items yourself. Ask a friend of family member to assist.
Storing Appliances
Now that your appliances are at the storage unit, it’s time to prepare them for long-term storage. It is important that the appliances are clean and dry to prevent any damage or pests getting in.
Place any hoses, smaller parts, or shelving that are not attached to the appliances in cardboard boxes or plastic totes. Remember to mark the boxes to make it easier to locate the parts and hoses later.
Storing Furniture
Properly storing all your furniture is critical in order to prevent potential pest damage and the damage that occurs while you arrange the pieces inside the unit. Keep your furniture covered with moving blankets, sheets, or a comforter to provide adequate protection. Avoid stacking heavy boxes or totes on top of your furniture to prevent scratches and damage, as well.
Placing the heavier, more cumbersome objects at the back of the storage unit will make it easier for you to access boxes or totes filled with items you will need more often, such as seasonal clothing or holiday decorations.
